Verse Analysis Method of Bible Study

Copy the verse from one or more versions of the Bible. Write it under the heading VERSE FOR STUDY.
(Choose one or two key words. Compare translations and see how your key words are used in each translation. Define your key words using an ordinary dictionary and a bible dictionary.)

1. Under the heading MESSAGE, write out in your own words what the verse says – what it commands, teaches, warns of, promises. (Use the insights you’ve gained from the translations as well as the definitions of your key words.)

2. Look at the verses immediately preceding and following the verse. These are known as the context of the verse. Under the heading CONTEXT, record first the thoughts added by the verse preceding your study verse. Then record the thoughts added by the verses following the study verse.

3. Record next the questions that the verse raises in your mind, or the problems you think it might pose for yourself or someone else. These can be recorded under the heading QUESTIONS.

4. The final section of your study is the APPLICATION. Under this heading, you should describe one specific way you can change your attitudes or action because of the teaching of this verse.
